Film adhesive provides superior composite bonding performance

Henkel Launches Hysol® PL 7000™ to Solve Composite Bonding Challenges

Henkel’s new film adhesive, Hysol® PL 7000™, an epoxy film adhesive, performs well even with pre-cured laminates that have been exposed to high humidity environments prior to secondary bonding.

Henkel’s new film adhesive, Hysol® PL 7000™, an epoxy film adhesive, performs well even with pre-cured laminates that have been exposed to high humidity environments prior to secondary bonding. This innovative film adhesive is formulated to provide excellent performance properties in composite bonding, and demonstrates cohesive strength on pre-cured composite surfaces that have been stored in humid bond shop environments.

Hysol® PL 7000™ features include:

  • Dual temperature cure capabilities –  at 120°C or 180°C
  • Outstanding tack and handling – excellent tack, yet it can be repositioned on itself or pre-impregnated on vertical surfaces
  • Good flow characteristics for surfacing applications
  • Superior shop life characteristics – Good performance on composite to composite bonding, co-cured composite bonding and composite to honeycomb bonding applications. Shop floor open time of 30 days at 90°F/30°C and 50% relative humidity.

Additionally, Hysol® PL 7000™ is qualified to Boeing’s BMS 5-154 composite film adhesive specification and is used on the following Boeing 787 bonding applications:

BMS 5-154 Type III Class 2 Grade 3A for Hysol PL7000 0.0325M psf

BMS 5-154 Type III Class 2 Grade 5 for Hysol PL7000 0.05M psf

BMS 5-154 Type III Class 2 Grade 8 for Hysol PL7000 0.08M psf

“Henkel is dedicated to finding solutions to the composite bonding challenges that our OEM customers face,” said Lyndon Smith, vice president, aerospace North America, Henkel. “Hysol ® PL 7000™ is another innovative product resulting from Henkel’s commitment to our customers and innovation in aerospace applications.”
